Hello lovelies! I created this little tutorial for another blog amigo a wee while ago but no contact for quite some time so I am sharing with you today! A super simple large pillowcase sewing machine tutorial.
1. Gather your supplies.
You will need -
1 Large pillowcase (over sized than your regular)
Scissors
Pins
Iron
Ironing Board
Decorative Doily
Bondaweb or other fusible webbing.
2. Figure out which part of your pillow case will you be using as your cover. With an oversized pillowcase it can basically be cut in half and either end used. I went for the top end so i could put a larger doily on the front for decoration.
3. Put your pillowcase (uncut) over your sewing machine to ensure it fits comfortably and mark a line where you will be cutting (allowing for seams etc. I just cut mine in half)
Once you have cut your pillowcase in half, turn it inside out and place on top of your machine again.
4. If you used the part of the pillow case which now has two openings at the top and bottom, stitch one of them closed and put it back over your sewing machine to asses the corners. Much like the bottom of a bag, we will be creating a box base. Pull the ends of the top of your pillow case and it should create little triangles either end. Ensure these are equal and pin to secure. (you will be sewing across this to create your box and cutting the little triangles off once happy.)
5. Because I used the top part of the pillowcase I needed to create a bottom seam. I pinned my seam and pressed flat using the iron.
6. I used my iron to press creases in all the corners of the cover to make it sturdier and easier to stitch.
7. I used tape to ensure I stitched straight as I can't see my seam guide when sewing this part. This is how I sewed my corners for the box end.
8. You can see I used framers tape on my sewing machine as a seam guide for straight stitching.
9. Sort of straight stitching haha. I then trimmed the excess fabric. I left mine quite large as its better to be safe. Nothing worse than not having enough fabric and having to start again!
Here you can see the boxed end and the seam completed. Once I did this I used my iron to put creases along the top and sides to make the machine cover stand a lot better. It also served as a guide for when I was attaching my decorative doily.
Here I have one large decorative doily and some bondaweb. I Ironed the bondaweb to the rear of the doily and cut round. (Not too precisely but I didn't want the bondaweb overlapping and sticking to my iron and creating marks on the finished cover.)
Once I had done that I decided where I was placing the doily on my cover, I removed the backing of the bondaweb and adhered to the front and side using the iron, folded underneath for visual effect and ironed it securely under there too. I had to repress the crease into the side but that was it.
Et voila! The finished cover.
