What do you guys think of this little fake cake hair clip/brooch?! Last year I made a fake cake bonnet for my granny’s birthday and it was a little bit heavy so this year I went streamline. This little post is dedicated to Jenny and Aaron from Everyday is a holiday! Thanks to the ‘Faux keepsake cake’ tutorial from their book ‘Mixed media masterpieces’.I deviated a little and didn’t create an entire cake; just a slice. Initially it was going to be a hair clip but I realised a brooch would be much more suitable for my granny!
Initially I wanted pink frosting ^_^ I obviously went in a little blind and started frosting without choosing my final cake topper. I eventually decided on some fake flowers that I stole off one of my ‘plants’ and it was a little bit too much pink. I received some ‘beach glass’ gloss paint by Martha Stewart and it’s my new favourite colour so that’s why I went for the gorgeous blue that you can see in the image above.
This is a little close up of the paint job; I think I did ok with mixing the cake colour!
And a little close up of the lightweight frosting.
It took me a little while to decide on the ‘candle’ pattern, I didn’t have too many straw colours so I went for green.
I gave my granny the choice between hair clip or brooch and she went for the brooch! The clip would have been a little too tall and unsteady on her little granny head. ^_^ I did have a little bit of yellow tissue paper poking out the top of the ‘candle’ but it got smooshed down the straw in transit and I couldn’t retrieve it! I was happy with how it looked and the only comment was that I had the jam on the top instead of the bottom!
