Cleaning hacks can save you SO much time and effort. I mean, do you ever feel like your life would be perfect if you could just wave a magic wand and instantly have a sparkly clean house? I know the feeling. Which means more time for lying on the couch and reading your favourite books on the free Kindle app or binging on your favourite TV shows.
My very first job was at 14 (cash in handy) and for years I worked as a cleaner; until I was about 18. I loved it. I’m an introvert so I loved being left to it and because my Aunty is a clean freak, I learned from the very best!
I’ve been using quite a few of these cleaning hacks for years so I can attest to their genius. They work.
So grab your headphones and start streaming your favourite music for free while you clean.

1.Use Bounce Dryer Sheets To Dust Everything (according to me)
I learned this tip a long time ago thanks to my Aunty who is a complete cleaning maniac. Her house is ALWAYS spotless. When I say above “dust everything (according to me)” I actually mean;
“dust everything with dryer sheets, not just your baseboards”Me via my Aunt circa early 2000’s
and it definitely works.
There’s an anti-static coating on those tumble dryer sheets so when you dust surfaces it means you are transferring the anti-static coating onto your furniture, skirting boards (baseboards) or even your car!
2. Vacuum Downy Unstoppables For A Fresh Smelling Hoover
If you have a stinky vacuum (I mean…. it happens), suck a few Unstoppables up your vacuum cleaner to solve the problem.
I have also wrapped a little bundle of these blue Unstoppables in a dried out baby wipe (dried on the radiator), tied it up with bakers twine and set a few of the bundles on most of the radiators in my house to make it smell super fresh! Stock up on unstoppables AND dryer sheets and be confident that your home will smell amazing.
3. Clean Your Dishwasher With White Vinegar and Baking Soda
When I lived in a house with housemates, our dishwasher was always getting stinky. Distilled white vinegar became one of the products GUARANTEED to be in my cupboards plus about 5kg of baking soda at any given time! White vinegar can be used for so many natural cleaning recipes if you want to know how to get rid of mould, guess what? I use vinegar!
One top tip to stop your dishwasher becoming stinky AT ALL:
Rinse all the food off your plates before you put it in the dishwasher. Seriously. Click to tweet this genius lil tip!
4. Clean The Drains
Again, when I lived in a house with housemates… we had a bathroom upstairs and the overflow pipe was constantly getting clogged. It was a nightmare. Queue another one of my favourite cleaning hacks! Of course, when that happened there was an awful smell from the drains. A lot of googling had to happen before I discovered the hack and we learned the baking soda, vinegar and boiling water trick! It worked and had to be repeated every few months.
5. Clean Blinds Without Breaking Them
Horizontal blinds can be delicate and can break quite easily so this trick from Mom4Real is great! Using tongs and a cut up microfibre cloth, a little ingenuity was definitely involved here.
6. How To Clean Wax Out Of Candle Jars
I’ve been using this trick for years! Quickly, clean out your freezer and shove those candles inside. Being in the freezer hardens the wax and makes it much easier to fall out. I sometimes need to use a sharp implement (an old metal kebab skewer or knife we keep for opening parcels etc).
Cleaning them out means that they can be repurposed, given to a charity shop or recycled in your regular recycling bin!
7. Use Fluffy Bed Socks As Swiffer Heads
Do you wear these snuggly bed socks? I have a medical condition which means I wear super thick socks and slippers to keep me toasty but I do wear delightful slipper duster things over my slipper boots which helps pick up crap from the floor.
You should definitely invest in these socks for your Swiffer or just wear them around the house.
8. Store Bed Clothes (Bed Sheets) In Their Matching Pillowcases
I remember seeing this tip on Martha Stewart years ago which is where the original photograph comes from. When I could be bothered to do this, it works a charm. I no longer have a linen closet for bedding and they get stored in a basket.
Not only that, I love mismatched bed linen to the annoyance of said Aunty from before. What can I say? I’m Quirky McQuirkerson ?
9. How To Deep Clean Your Oven Racks
Have you ordered that distilled white vinegar and baking soda? Guess what you need to clean your oven racks! You will also need some kind of scrubby tool to get the real baked-on gunk off the racks.
10. Save Your Back With This Trick
Use dawn dish soap and a broom to save having to bend over the tub which is GENIUS if you suffer from any kind of back pain. Back pain is one of the most common complaints of adults so Jillee definitely deserves the title of genius.
11. Deep Clean Cutting Boards Using Salt and Lemons
Cutting boards can get stanky. Especially in the slices that end up in your board. All you need is kosher salt and a lemon! The citrus and salt work their magic, remove all the gunk and grime AND disinfect the board. Perfect!
12. Pick Up Pet Hair From Carpet Easily Using A Carpet Rake
These carpet rakes are genius products! If you own a cat or dog and have carpets or a rug, then you need to get your hands on one of these genius products. There’s nothing worse than having a visitor leave your home and you realise how gross your carpet is. It’s mortifying!
13. Make Your Toaster Shine
The instructions are no longer available via ARealHousewife so I’m going to share my technique with you.
Get yourself a toothbrush, some baking soda, water and guess what? White vinegar! To buff it up, you will want to get one of these.
- Unplug the toaster.
- Remove any excess crumbs or dirt using soap and water.
- Then use the baking soda and water to make a paste and apply to your toaster.
- Use that toothbrush and start scrubbing! If there are particularly bad stains that won’t come off, you will want to place the toaster on its side and apply some white vinegar. Allow to sit for about 15 minutes and attempt to scrub off.
- Use a damp cloth with a little soap and clean the paste off.
- Make it shiny with a magic eraser.
14. Shine Your Fridge Using Mineral Oil Or Baby Oil
The same technique can be used for your fridge! You can use magic erasers to buff up the fridge but there’s a chance that you will go through them pretty quickly.
Using one of these cloths and mineral oil is an excellent way to make your fridge shine! Baby oil is a perfumed version of Mineral Oil and is a little more expensive.
If you buy mineral oil you can still use it as baby oil. Maybe save yourself a buck or two!
15. Deep Clean Your Oven
You might want to mix up another batch of that paste to clean your oven! Add a little dish soap and use a lemon to do your scrubbing.
16. Remove Oil Stains From Carpet
Grab yourself one of these bottles and grab the vinegar! If you have any stains on a carpet or a rug this cleaner works well. Since I use white vinegar for e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g, I can attest to how well it works. It’s magical. Obviously, white vinegar has got magical properties. It’s great for cleaning out your washing machine too. Because of course, I can’t not tell you about epic cleaning hacks.
You will need an iron like this to use the technique shared by DIYnCrafts & you can get full details over on the site (linked at image).
17. Deep Clean Your Microwave
This has to be the laziest way to clean your microwave ever and it works like a charm! I’m certain that you can also use white vinegar for this. It’s not clear what magic has to happen for this to work but vinegar steam seems to be the key. Hot magic!
18. Clean Showerheads To Remove Limescale Build Up From GreenIdeasReview
White vinegar is also incredible to help you remove limescale. I make sure to add it to the drip tray in my parent’s refrigerator because limescale tends to build up quite a bit. Using a sandwich bag and cable tie full of vinegar and left overnight allows all the limescale scum to dissolve. In the morning you can use a toothbrush to make sure you get it all.
19. The Easy Way To Clean A Blender By AskSarah
Seriously… if you clean your blender any other way, you’re an eejit.
