Unsure about whether knitting a giant chunky knit blanket kit is possible when you have little experience in knitting?! I hate to jump the gun but it totally is. BUT, there are some things you will have to do to make it achievable. This particular super chunky DIY blanket knitting kit is called the Udon XXL kit. There is a regular size available but I got XXL because I'm tall.
Big knitting is INSANELY popular right now, which is why I decided to write a review post on the We Are Knitters Udon XXL Knit Kit! I'm so excited to tell you about this super chunky knitting kit. I honestly knew it was going to be a challenge but oh boy. In the end, I got an awesome chunky blanket so I'm happy; spoiler alert.
The Super Chunky Blanket Kit Review:
The Udon Blanket XXL Knitting Kit Review + We Are Knitters Coupon Code!
Knitting has always looked so complicated to me, just because of the finished product and things you can achieve with two sticks, yarn and making loops. I remember watching my grandmother knitting and thinking back then… who figured this was a thing?!
A few years ago I was contacted to make a knitting kit for total noobs which I did and never looked at my needles again. Well, I looked at them and then glanced past to anything else that wasn’t the needles. Remembering the shouting that I did at the written instructions. Recently though, I realised that I would love to actually complete a big crochet or knitting project so I can have a new cosy blanket for winter!
We Are Knitters contacted me to partner on a post; all I had to do was review a knitting kit, and I was so intrigued by whether or not I could actually complete a blanket. I knew that if I said yes, I’d have no choice. Whether or not I enjoyed the chunky DIY blanket knitting process, would be something else entirely.
About The Udon Blanket XXL Kit:
If you live in a cold country, have friends or family who are wannabe knitters and love snuggling with blankets, this chunky knit kit would make an amazing gift! I just love everything about it. As soon as it arrived I made a sound which let the delivery driver know, it was like Christmas morning in that moment and he just laughed. Seriously, I was like a giddy child.
Obviously, I had to run up and open the box immediately. Then, the creative director had to come and oversee proceedings.
Inside The Udon Blanket XXL Kit:
In this Knit Kit you will receive:
- 15 MM / US 19 Wooden Needles
- 9 Skeins of wool (200 Grams)
- The Pattern Booklet
- Sewing Needle (Tapestry needle) for label
- Embroidered Label
- WAK Packaging - suggests reusing it for carrying your WIP’s in (works in progress)
The pattern booklet outlines the steps, which are very basic but it does tell you the stitches needed for the project. Thankfully, We Are Knitters has a few video tutorials on, which came in veeery handy because I skimmed my steps when I should have concentrated. I was too excited!
However, I managed to get my ‘knitting a complete row’ time from 30 minutes (I was just starting!) to 6 minutes! I even took it with me to visit my parents for a couple of days (I’m housebound so it’s nice to get a change of scenery) and my mum watched documentaries while I *clack clack clack clack*. She did once ask “are you doing that without looking?” and yes, yes I was. And I wasn’t making mistakes. I was using my fingers to guide me, so I was VERY proud at the journey I went on in 10 days (knitting for an hour or so at a time).
Why I Chose The Udon XXL Kit
Honestly, I chose the Udon XXL knitting kit for three reasons;
- The Skill Level Is Easy
- It’s going to be big enough to cover my giant legs (I was thinking of Fall and Winter)
- It looks gorgeous
But, I was fully aware that it would take a long time. It’s not a quick weekend project, especially if you haven’t done any knitting in a while (or ever). You will need to do a lot of ‘frogging’, which means ripping it up all up and starting again but honestly, it wasn’t that bad. When you complete this project though... you will feel amazing! Punching the air kind of amazing.
It was a great way to spend time in the evenings, snuggled up with the cat, the husband and plenty of tea.
Approaching This Kit As Someone With ZERO Knitting Experience
As a knitting kit, this is great and I loved it. However, if you get this kit please get yourself some circular knitting needles. It just makes life easier.
As for claims this an Easy kit? It IS easy BUT, if you have never knitted before, I would practice stitches on smaller needles first. There were times when I remembered the old adage
“It’s easy when you know how”
The fact that this was a DIY giant throw was intimidating.
Practice the knit stitch and purl stitch and learn how to identify what these stitches look like. You will get ALL of this information from the video that accompanies this kit.
However, as a TOTAL beginner, it might be difficult to get the hang of these stitches when using giant needles. I just know that I had a similar problem when trying to learn how to crochet using a needle that was just too big to be comfortable for someone new. Thus, chunky DIY blanket knitting might be tricky if you haven't mastered the basics with the right sized needles.
Knowing that different yarn weights require different sized needles will definitely help, and not to worry about tension too much in the beginning because once you find your natural rhythm, you’re golden.
Approaching The Udon Blanket XXL Kit As A Disabled Woman
Due to my illnesses and disabilities (read about them here), knitting was always going to be quite tricky. Giant knitting can get very heavy and you can experience repetitive strain injury. My main problems are my joints and connective tissue, so I’m not strong and I can dislocate anything and always.
For this kit, I used long straight needles provided but I believe it would be much easier for me to do chunky diy giant knit blanket as a disabled woman, using circular needles. It would lessen the room required to knit, I wouldn’t be poking the cats' arse every two minutes and it wouldn’t be as heavy. If you can get plastic knitting needles like these, even better!
This blanket got pretty heavy for me so I ended up having to build a stack of pillows as elbow supports, which worked a treat. But it did look like a pillow fort had been built around me because I still needed support for my head and sitting upright.
Pro’s And Con’s To This Kit:
First, the Pro's:
- Would make a great gift either as a kit or as a finished blanket.
- The packaging is great.
- Is really enjoyable to make.
- I love the snuggly blanket that I ended up with.
- The chunky yarn is a stunning shade.
- It is a very easy blanket to make once you know the stitches required (video provided).
- I LOVE stickers.
- Video instructions are very easy to follow and you can see how it should look as you make the stitch.
And now for the Con's
- All necessary information included BUT just to make the instructional video easier to find (it wasn’t difficult to find) I would like to see a QR code in there for lightning-quick access.
- Would like to see washing instructions for Yarn on the embroidered label.
- It can get heavy (applies to ALL large chunky knitting/crochet projects, not just this kit). So, I swapped and used plastic needles to make it lighter (due to illness)
Final Verdict On This Chunky DIY Knit Kit
Would I purchase it or use it again?
Definitely! In fact, I’d like it maybe four more times in different coloured yarn. The handpainted yarn version would be my top choice along with circular needles.
I would give this knit kit 4 out of 5 stars. The only thing that I would do is add some sort of label with washing instructions for the yarn, which would be helpful for many people, many years to come. Whether you give the blanket as a finished gift or give them the gift of a new skill, it is well worth it.
The Poop Of Approval:
I think Poopers gives it 5 Poops out of 5. She's never off the chunky knitted throw and there are constantly neon pink fibres sticking to her nose. It's pretty cute. Idiot. I use a giant throw over my couch to protect it and the coral giant chunky blanket is her absolute favourite to snooze on.
To save $12 on your kit, don’t forget to use the code MGMUPX928 and choose the circular needles!
